Bucs Hot Reads: G Meredith adds size to line

Big man’s game

At 6-foot-5, 312 pounds, Jamon Meredith is one of the Bucs’ biggest offensive linemen. That’s why they are leaning toward starting him at left guard Sunday at Seattle.

“Jamon is a bigger guy and this is going to be a big man’s game on Sunday,’’ Bucs coach Greg Schiano said. “The Seahawks are big and I think he gives us a better physical matchup with them.’’

Four-time Pro Bowler Carl Nicks started the season at left guard, but was sidelined by a MRSA infection. That has forced Tampa Bay to start Ted Larsen and Jeremy Zuttah at that position in recent weeks.

“I thought Jamon has practiced well two days in a row, so unless something makes us change our mind (he’ll start),’’ Schiano said. “He’s done a nice job and hopefully he gives us a chance to move some of those big guys.’’

By the numbers

The Bucs have the league’s 26th-ranked offense. Their average starting position on drives off kickoffs might be a reason. Tampa Bay’s average starting position is the 19.4-yard line. Only the Oakland Raiders (18.9) are starting deeper in their own territory after kickoffs than the Bucs.

Did you know?

The Bucs defense has been stout on first down. Tampa Bay allows an average of 4.36 yards on first down, which is fifth-best in the league and more than a yard better than the league average of 5.39.

Quote of the day

“I had an old high school coach who used to say they don’t need your pats on the back and your love when you’re winning. They need it when things are tough. So now is when they need it because now they’re not getting it from anybody.’’

- Bucs coach Greg Schiano, on how he treats the players during a losing streak.
