For good or bad, sometimes nicknames just stick.
Buccaneers running back Doug Martin would like to unglue the one he was labeled with during his college days at Boise State.
So, the rookie tailback launched a contest via the team's Facebook account asking for input to help erase the "Muscle Hamster'' moniker given to him by a college teammate who felt it aptly described Martin's muscular frame and chubby cheeks.
"Muscle hamster? Really," Martin said in a video message. "I don't think so."
The message was posted late Thursday, and by Friday afternoon there were more than 3,100 replies with new suggestions for a nickname.
Among the names suggested: Mighty Mouse or Mighty Mite, Dougie Fresh, Bay Area Bulldog, Jukebox, The D-Train, Danger Mouse, Pony Express, Cannon Ball and Doug "Aston" Martin.
The person who suggests the winning name receives an autographed Martin T-shirt.
Martin's nickname plight has received national attention since his breakout game on Sunday in his hometown of Oakland, where he ran for a franchise-record 251 yards and became the first player in NFL history to have three touchdown runs of at least 45 yards in the same game.
The subject came up during Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano's meeting with the media on Friday, when he was asked what name he uses to address his rookie running back.
"I call him Doug," Schiano said.
Hmmm, that probably won't win the T-shirt.
