Wiregrass Ranch High named current Bulls assistant Artie Meza as its head football coach Thursday, just a week after Mike Lawrence left to take a college assistant job in Kansas.
“Honestly, there are not many words to describe this because it’s like coming home again,” said the former Pasco High quarterback, who started for the Pirates in 1994-95. “I just want to thank Mike Lawrence for the opportunity to call us all head coaches and prepare me for this. And I just want to make guys proud, guys like (former Pasco and Wiregrass coach) Ricky Thomas, who was my coach and got me into football when I was at Weightman (Middle).”
Prior to last season, Meza was Zephyrhills’ offensive coordinator for two years. He also spent time as an East Bay assistant and was the boys soccer coach at Spoto for a brief period.
“I know what’s in store for us and what we have in the district,” Meza said. “We have a lot of dedicated kids who have put in a lot of time and I’m excited for us to get to work in just a couple of Mondays.”
