A crash at the Citrus County Speedway in Inverness on Saturday night killed the driver of one of the racing vehicles, a school bus.

Citrus County sheriff's deputies said the crash occurred just before 10 p.m. at the popular race track on U.S. 41 just south of town.

The sanctioned event took place on a figure-8 course in which school buses are the racing vehicles. A bus driven by 62-year-old Charles "Chick" Whitehead of Ocala overturned, trapping him inside, deputies said.

Another bus struck Whitehead's vehicle as it lay overturned, deputies said, but no other injuries were reported.

Firefighters found Whitehead still in his seat, restrained by his racing safety harness. He was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The Medical Examiner's Office in Leesburg will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
