Knight Parade to honors first responders

Published:   |   Updated: February 5, 2014 at 12:56 PM

The Krewe of Sant’ Yago Knight Parade, set for Saturday night, will honor Tampa Bay area first responders and The Gold Shield Foundation as grand marshals.

The parade also includes the return of TV personality Jerry Springer as a special guest. The parade is part of a weekend of activities, presented by TV station MOR.

The weekend kicks off with the Concert Supporting America’s Finest featuring singer/songwriter Theresa Sareo. The event is at 5:30 p.m. at The Ritz Ybor with tickets $20; free for military members.

Since being struck by an impaired driver in 2002, which forced the amputation of her right leg, Sareo has focused on performing for and inspiring wounded warriors and trauma victims. Proceeds from the concert benefit the Gramatica Family Foundation, which supports wounded combat veterans.

The event continues at 4 p.m. Saturday with pre-parade festivities in Centro Ybor, including an opportunity to meet Springer and entertainment by the Renaissance Fair players, Stewie from “Family Guy” and more.

At 7 p.m., the Knight Parade begins, featuring illuminated floats, marching bands, thousands of participant and scores of beads. First responders from the Tampa Police Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Tampa Fire Rescue and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue will be honored on the Grand Marshal float, along with representatives of The Gold Shield Foundation.

Jamie Lowrance of the Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago is the parade chairman.

The parade event is free, but reserved seating is available starting at $25. For information, call the Italian Club at (813) 248-3316.
