Fashion show funds domestic-violence prevention

SOUTH TAMPA – Members and supporters of Brighter Tomorrows looked through racks of clothes recently – wanting to appear just right for their modeling roles.

They were preparing for the fourth annual luncheon and fashion show, sponsored by the nonprofit organization, which provides grants to groups that help prevent domestic violence or provide help to victims. The public event will be May 3 at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club.

But on April 3, they gathered at Kit’s Well-Dressed, 3006 W. Swann Ave., to select outfits, share some wine and cheese and kick off plans for the event.

Jeanie Gassman, a Town ‘N Country resident, is chairwoman of the fourth annual event, which features women’s and children’s clothing, ranging from casual to elegant evening wear. However, men are welcome to attend, too, she said

“There’s no theme but we are celebrating moms and speaking out against domestic violence,” she said.

Gassman said a special speaker will be a survivor of domestic violence and organizers hope to draw 200 guests to the event.

This is the first time the event has partnered with Kit’s for the clothing. Kit’s owner, Kit Stewart, said she plans to bring a “bling” table with flashy accessories to the event as well as some other items with a portion of the sales donated to Brighter Tomorrows.

“I’m proud to be a part of it,” said Stewart. “They are an amazing group and so supportive. It is a great effort and teamwork.”
