APOLLO BEACH — About 200 veteran motorcyclists will gather Saturdayat Beef ‘O’ Brady’s, 205 Apollo Beach Blvd., to kick off Project Corregidor’s 2013 Ride for the Fallen.

All proceeds will go to the Grief and Peer Mentoring Program at My Warrior’s Place in Ruskin, which supports veterans and active military members who have endured the loss of a comrade in arms.

An opening ceremony with brunch will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Beef’s followed by an escorted ride led by Patriot Guard Rider Thomas “T-Man” Brown, AMVET Riders, Latin Soldiers and other Patriot Guard Riders to Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa. The ride is in memory of Army Spc. Corey J. Kowall — organizer Kelly Kowall’s son — and all fallen warriors.

At 1 p.m. there will be a numbered G.I. Joe Parachute Drop, where entrants will have the chance to win $25,000 cash. And even if no one does, there’s another great prize.

“Somebody will definitely win two round-trip tickets anywhere Southwest Airlines flies,” Kowall said.

A Poker Run begins at 1:30 p.m. Starting with a playing card at Veterans Memorial Park, riders will collect additional cards at American Legion Post 146 and VFW Post 8108 in Riverview, Buffalo Wild Wings in Lithia and stop at AMVET Post 44 in Plant City, where they’ll get their final card to build their hands. Fallen Warrior signs will be placed all along the route.

Prizes will be given for best and worst poker hands.

The after-ride party will include food, raffles and live music.

“This is the biggest annual fundraiser for My Warrior’s Place,” Kowall said. “We’re honored to be able to recognize military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s important that they’re never forgotten.”

All event tickets, which include a G.I. Joe Drop entry, are $20 per person. They can be purchased in advance at Re/Max Bayside, 237 Apollo Beach Blvd.; online at www.ride4fallen.org; or on the day of the event at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s – Apollo Beach. Additional drop entries are $5 each.

Vehicles of all types are welcome to participate in the ride. For additional information, email kelly@mywarriorsplace.org.
