Riverview High School student wins Poetry Jam

More than 20 students participated in the recent 2013-2014 Poetry Jam district finals at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and Riverview High School student Nynchoyha Pitt won first place. The jam was a contest in which students read or recited their own poems in front of an audience.

The poetry included lots of social commentary. Organizers said Pitt dominated the stage as she talked positively about being a black woman. Topics during the jam included homosexuality, equal rights, love, teenage angst, eating disorders and more.

The Poetry Jam is a partnership between the Hillsborough County School District and the Art Council of Hillsborough County.
