Library hosts record book sale

The Friends of the SouthShore Library recently hosted its annual Giant Book Sale and made $962 to pay for the library’s free programs. An estimated 540 customers attended the sale and purcheased more than 5,000 books. Boys from AMI Youth Environmental Services helped with the heavy lifting.

Sign up your kids for soccer

Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation will register players for its 5-on-5 Youth Soccer League Monday through Jan. 10 at the Ruskin Recreation Center, 901 Sixth St. S.E., for children ages 5 to 12. The cost is $25. Kids can learn the basic skills of soccer by playing in the league.

Skate parks to host trick contest

Skateboarders are invited to show off their best tricks during winter break Dec. 27 at the Brandon Skate Park, 5720 Providence Road, Riverview, and the Apollo Beach Skate Park, 664 Golf and Sea Blvd. There will be two categories: ages 15 and younger and ages 16 and older.

Skaters will perform for judges and compete for free gift cards. Participants must have a current, notarized waiver on file at the park office where they wish to compete. Start times are noon at the Brandon Skate Park and 5 p.m. at the Apollo Beach Skate Park.

Scholarships available

Arts for Life! annually awards $2,000 scholarships to 25 graduating high school seniors who demonstrate excellence in creative writing, dance, drama, music or visual art.

Applications are being accepted from students who are graduating from a public or private school or home education program during 2014. They must submit completed information forms, brief essays explaining how the arts have positively influenced their lives and portfolios of their work in creative writing, dance, drama, music or visual art.

Applications must be postmarked on or before Feb. 1 and mailed to: Foundation for Excellence in Education, Arts for Life!, P.O. Box 10691, Tallahassee, FL 32302.

Awards will be announced next spring.

Brandon Ballet to present “The Nutcracker”

Plan now to attend a Brandon Ballet performance of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” Dec. 14 and 15 at the Spoto High School Auditorium, 8538 Eagle Palm Drive, Riverview. The production will include new choreography by Artistic Director Octavio Martin, a number of professional dancers, lavish costumes and scenery and Tchaikovsky’s original score.

Show times are 2 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, and 2 and 5:30 p.m., Sunday,.

Get a free ELAPP calendar

Hillsborough County is offering free, 2014 Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program calendars at several South Shore locations. The calendar was developed through contest photos capturing the natural beauty of 60 county ELAPP sites.

Calendars are available, while supplies last, at any of the following sites:
