RUSKIN – Ruskin United Methodist Church members will do some door knocking the week of July 27 to share the good news about Jesus Christ and perform random acts of kindness throughout the community.
The church is partnering with the Orlando-based Celebrate Jesus Mission, which is sending 10 people to work with RUMC teams in Apollo Beach, Ruskin and Sun City Center.
Their purpose is to share the love of Christ with everyone they meet, to pray with them and deliver his message through actions as well as words. The church’s youth group will offer random acts of kindness, such as washing floors and windows, loading or unloading a truck, handing out bottled water on a hot day or cleaning a bathroom to area businesses as part of their weeklong mission.
“We want to follow Jesus’ example of going out among the people throughout his ministry and reaching out to them,” said the Rev. Hal Jeffery, RUMC youth pastor and event coordinator. “We want to help and encourage our neighbors and show them the church cares.”
Celebrate Jesus is a campaign for church members to get out into the community, meet people and introduce them to RUMC and its programs. They will ask for prayer requests, provide a bag filled with information and a party invitation at each place they visit.
RUMC’s goal is to reach more than 3,000 homes and businesses during the week, and then wrap-up the effort by hosting a block party for the folks they’ve visited from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1.
The event will include free hot dogs and burgers, cotton candy, drinks, a roasted pig; bounce houses, dunk tank, petting zoo, clowns and face painting; a car show, race cars, racing motorcycles and more. WTIS Radio Live and DJ Joey Ferrante of the SCC Roamin’ Oldies will be on hand. And fishing Capt. Josh Simmons will host a casting demonstration and contest for the kids.
The party is being paid for by church members and community donations.
