A dump truck went out of control and wound up in the Alafia River this morning, leading to a complicated extrication of the driver by Hillsborough Fire Rescue.

About 10 a.m., Fire Rescue received several 911 calls about a dump truck that went out of control and drove into the Alafia River off of U.S. 41 just south of Riverview Drive in Gibsonton.

Crews arrived to find water near the driver's neck.

Fire Rescue, assisted by heavy rescue and marine units, were able to rescue him, all the time keeping him above the water.

The driver was taken to a hospital in good condition, Fire Rescue said.
