Privateer ship Lynx sails into Tampa Bay

Published:   |   Updated: April 3, 2013 at 10:43 PM

An armed privateer ship sailed into Tampa Bay today with cannons booming.

The Lynx, a 122-foot, historic replica of a fast-sailing ship that helped America win the War of 1812 against the British, arrived in St. Petersburg about noon.

The ship will be in town for a 12-day stay at the Harborage Marina at First Street Southeast and 13th Avenue, where it will offer tours and sailing excursions.

Ship tours are $6, free for ages 4 to 12.

Two-hour sailing excursions cost $65, or $35 for ages 4 to 12.

The ship was built to near-exact specifications of the original Baltimore schooner design, and the crew dresses in authentic maritime clothing from the 1800s.

The ship has also been hired in the past to train the cast and crew of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise.
