PLANT CITY Durant High School student Keenya Wright and Plant City High student Nancy Mendoza recently received scholarship awards from a local club for excellence in academics and community service.

Wright and Mendoza can use the James C. Billings Scholarship Awards for tuition at Hillsborough Community College.

The students were given the award by the Plant City Civitan Club for their involvement in their community, schools and churches.

Wright serves as the president of the youth ministry at her church and is an outstanding student at her school. She plans to become a pediatric nurse.

Mendoza is a National Honor Society member, enjoys volunteering in the Relay for Life and serves as a bilingual aide and tutor. She plans to seek a master’s degree in nursing.

Civitan Club President Pat Pogue presented the honor to each student with the help of the college and career counselor from each school.

Dr. Daniel Middlebrooks, a local pastor and Plant City chaplain, was among the speakers at the program.
