PLANT CITY Registration is underway for the 48th season of the Plant City Recreation and Parks Department/Optimist Youth Flag Football Program.

The program, which emphasizes good sportsmanship and fair play, is for girls and boys 4 to 15 years old. Registration continues through Sept. 3 for guaranteed placement on a team; games are played Saturdays, Sept. 20 through Nov. 1.

Last year, about 300 players competed in coed teams in five age groups.

Games are played at the Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex, 2402 E. Cherry St.

There are no coaches or practices, and teams meet each week. “Instructing officials” are assigned to ensure each player carries or catches the ball and subs are rotated evenly, and to assist in play calling if needed.

The program provides basic training in football skills and rules, and strives to build the character of the players.

The cost is $35 for the seven-game season and includes jersey and accident insurance.

Parents can register their children at the Recreation and Parks Department administrative office, 1904 S. Park Road. For information, go to www.plantcitygov.com and keyword search “flag football” or contact Recreation Youth Athletics Coordinator Danny Smith at dsmith@plantcitygov .com or (813) 659-4200, ext. 4313.
