PLANT CITY USA Baseball has announced that 40 players, including Plant City’s Kendall Dawson, have been invited to try out for a national women’s baseball team.
Trials for the team will take place Aug. 18-21 at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. The final 20-player roster for the women’s national team will be announced after the event.
The team will represent the U.S. at the World Baseball Softball Confederation’s Women’s Baseball World Cup in September in Miyazaki, Japan.
Dawson, a catcher, was a standout for the Plant City High School Raiders before her 2008 graduation. She went on to play four seasons with the University of Alabama, where she was a two-time Southeastern Conference All-Defensive team honoree.
Her four-year efforts on the field culminated with the Crimson Tide winning the 2012 College World Series over the Oklahoma Sooners.
Last year, St. Leo University added her to the coaching staff.
Dawson couldn’t be reached last week for comment.
