PLANT CITY Many of the more than 50 donation bins scattered around town should soon disappear.
City commissioners voted unanimously Monday to approve a law regulating donation bins. Among other provisions, the law limits one bin per property under most circumstances, and bans them all together in downtown and the midtown redevelopment area.
The number of bins has proliferated in recent months and city officials say they were concerned that bins are not always operated by charities.
The ordinance requires that owners of bins provide proof that the donations are benefiting charity and that the bins are maintained. The law includes a 60-day grace period before the regulations are enforced.
A spokesman for a trade organization was the only speaker at the public hearing before the vote; he urged its denial as he said the bins help keep used clothing out of the landfill.
