An 80-year-old man drowned in a Plant City pond Friday night after he apparently wandered in, deputies said.

A resident of the Tampa East RV Resort Park, 4630 McIntosh Road, found the body of Joseph Edgar Ross, who lives in the park, floating in the pond about 10 a.m. today, said Debbie Carter, spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

A resident of the park heard someone yelling for help at 9:30 p.m. Friday and after about five minutes, the yelling stopped, Carter said.

The resident waited 2 ½ hours before calling deputies, Carter said.

Deputies arrived about midnight and searched the pond and the area around it for about 30 minutes but didn't find anything, Carter said.

It appears Ross wandered into the pond, which is filled with underwater vegetation, and drowned, Carter said.
