PLANT CITY Twelve Plant City High School students who overcame obstacles have received an award named for an educator who died in 2004.

The students were presented with the Jan Henrick Award for achieving good grades or reaching other goals. Henrick was a guidance counselor and swim coach in Plant City before working in Tampa area schools before her death after a battle with cancer.

Plant City High winners included Brandy Adams, Jennifer Carrasco, Alexandru Foaltin, Faith Griffith, Ahmad Hajaz, Silvia Hernandez, Hector Hernandez, Mario Leon, Trinity Lester, Jasmin, Mitchell, Fidel Sanchez and Yesenia Trevino.

Each winner received a $150 gift card to Walmart, and the school was presented with a plaque with all the names of the recipients inscribed.

The students and their parents were honored at a dinner at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City. Social studies teacher Della Warner and college and career counselor Sherrie Mueller represented the faculty at the event.

The award was established in 2002, two years before Henrick’s death. Her husband Kevin Bohne and his company, Florida Gas and Electric Corp., have spearheaded fundraising to keep the award active.

The guests at the banquet included Plant City High golfers Lindsey Box, Kellyanne Hurst and William George Kendall, who placed second in a tournament that raised money for the Henrick award.

Besides Plant City High, students from Wharton High School and Pasco High School are eligible for the award.
