Plant City Christmas Parade winners receive trophies, checks

Published:

PLANT CITY A Little League, step team, church and marching band were honored last week for having the best entries in the Dec. 4 Plant City Christmas Parade.

Christmas parade president Tom Daramus presented trophies and checks to winners at an awards ceremony on the steps of Sassi, an interior decorating shop at 314 S. Collins St.

The winners, selected by a panel of judges, included: Antioch Little League, Overall Parade Winner; Strawberry Crest High School, Best Marching Band; Durant Alpha Cougar Step Team, Best School Entry; and Shiloh Baptist Church, Best Church Entry.

The winners were elated.

“It’s the first year we’ve come in first place,” said Cheri Sleeper, director of instrumental music at Strawberry Crest.

The Marching Chargers have placed in the parade contest before but 2013 was their first win, she said.

Durant’s Alpha Cougar Step Team also took home first place honors for the first time.

Sponsor Kandice Hill said the team’s float featured a Christmas-theme - in black and gold.

“Even the tree was black, it was pretty cool,” she said.

Hill explained that building an award winning float did not come without hard work and effort.

“It was crazy,” she said, “but it came out nice.”
