PLANT CITY – Applications are being accepted for floats, bands and other participants for the March 1 Youth Parade.

The parade, held during the Florida Strawberry Festival, has been organized by the Plant City Civitan Club for 40 years. And as the name suggests, the parade is all about youngsters.

With the exception of band directors and chaperones, no one older than 18 can participate.

Civitan Club President Pat Pogue expects it to be “the greatest parade ever.” Already, 11 bands have submitted applications, she said.

Last year, the parade included nearly 60 entries, and Pogue hopes to top that this year.

Trophies, rosettes and $100 are awarded for the best club/group float and best church float. Best marching unit and best band entry receive a trophy and rosette.

Winners are selected by a team of judges who don’t live in Plant City, Pogue said.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. March 1 at the State Farmers Market at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Alexander Street. The procession travels north on Alexander, and west on Reynolds Street past the festival grounds.
