Mud run returns with new challenges, ‘70s theme

PLANT CITY Competitors can test their limits and celebrate a bygone era at a Sept. 6 mud run.

Runners and spectators at Mud Titan III are encouraged to wear ‘70s costumes, and organizers will play music from that decade. The first wave of competitors will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the last wave will hit the course at 1 p.m.

Registration is $89 through Aug. 29 for the competition at Roberts Ranch, 1500 Prevatt Road. For online registration, use the promo code “Courier” for a special discount.

Registration the day of the event is $99.

Race organizer Mike Nelson said the mud run is returning to Roberts Ranch to give runners a new scene. The last Mud Titan was at a different venue.

“We’re really just trying to keep variety,” Nelson said. “We have a lot of loyal followers right now.”

Nelson said some changes have been added to Mud Titan to help keep the event new and fun. For example, runners in the second wave can choose to carry a raw egg. Additional awards and prizes will be given to anyone who can finish the course with the egg unbroken.

Nelson the race date coincides with the beginning of the obstacle course racing season, which occurs during the fall and spring.

“We seemed to have always gotten the awkward dates of Christmas and holidays,” he said, adding they hope the new date will draw more runners.

Obstacles include hurdles, walls, swinging ropes, fire and mud. Nelson said organizers have worked to make the obstacles in the 5K race bigger and wider than ever to keep runners challenged.

“Our goal is when they get there to say, ‘Man, this is so different from the last one,” he said.
