PLANT CITY - Friends and family members were on hand as city commissioners honored the memory and community service of the late Doug Gibbs.
Mayor Rick Lott presented a proclamation that praised Gibbs for his “wit and wisdom.”
“I think everyone in this room as been touched by Doug Gibbs in some way,” Lott said.
Gibbs, a real estate broker known affectionately as “Gibber,” died May 18 at age 45 from complications from heart surgery. The Plant City native was a former chairman of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, recipient of the International President’s Award from Lions Club International and served as a member of many city and business committees.
“We lost a great community leader. We lost a great friend,” said City Commissioner Billy Keel, who was a friend of Gibbs since they were teenagers.
Gibbs is survived by his partner of 11 years, Carole Wright, his parents, Jack and Elizabeth, brother and sister-in-law Ken and Debbie, grandmother Margaret, five nephews and two neices. Many of the family members were at the June 9 city commission meeting where Lott presented the proclamation.
