PLANT CITY Registration is under way for the next month’s Strawberry Distance Challenge.
The race, set to return for the seventh year, encourages fitness and healthy living while raising money for charity. Discounted early registration is available through Jan. 13.
The race, organized by Mike Nelson and Bruce Baerwalde, begins at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 8 at the Walden Lake Polo Fields, 3035 Griffin Blvd.
“It’s a run on the streets of Walden Lake,” Nelson said, explaining that this year a third and extended course has been added so that participants can choose between a mile, a 5k (3.1 miles), or an 8k (4.9 miles). Nelson said organizers added an extended route in response to several requests.
Chip timing will be available but there is no time limit to finish the race. Participants can either walk or run each course.
Nelson, who also organized the recent Mud Titian run, said a portion of the proceeds from the Strawberry Distance Challenge will go toward the Youth Alliance, an organization that promotes healthy living and anti-bullying, and various other organizations that support youth.
Registration for the race is $15 for the mile, $25 for the 5k, and $30 for the 8k before Jan. 13. There’s also an extra 10 percent off available for participants who sign up online for the 5k and 8 k races by Jan. 13 and use the promo code “Courier.
After Jan. 13, the prices increase to $18, $30 and $35, respectively.
Registration will be available the day of the race beginning an hour before start time. There is no charge for parking and spectators are admitted free.
Medals will be awarded to top finishers in age and gender groups. All first place winners receive an entry ticket into the 2014 Florida Strawberry Festival.
