Lifelong residents Lloyd and Mavis Evers will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Thursday.
The couple, then 19 and 17, respectively, were married in the bride's home Jan. 31, 1943, by pastor Harry DeVane of Southside Baptist Church. Lloyd Evers and the former Mavis Watkins graduated from Turkey Creek High School.
Lloyd Evers worked in phosphate mines before he bought orange groves and went into the citrus business, from which he retired.
One of their daughters, Gayle Campbell of Plant City, credits the couple's faith with their long marriage. They are longtime members of Hopewell Baptist Church.
"They leaned on Him (Jesus) for all their guidance," she said.
Besides Campbell, the Evers have three other children: Carole Harris of Sebring; Lloyd Evers Jr. of Hollywood, Fla.; and Sylvia Montefu of Plant City, plus 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A family celebration of the landmark anniversary is planned.
