PLANT CITY -

Football won't be the only game in town on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3.

The Dartts, a gospel group that has appeared in 37 states, will perform a 6 p.m. concert at the First Church of God of Plant City.

"We call it Super Sunday," church pastor Clarence Phairas said.

The concert will be followed by free strawberry shortcake in the fellowship hall of the church, 601 N. Gordon St.

The appearance by The Dartts is the first of three free concerts planned for early this year by the church. The others include Woody & Vonnie Wright, 6 p.m. March 3; and Forgiven, 6 p.m. March 24.

All of the concerts are free, although an offering will be collected for each group.

"This is our way to say thanks to Plant City. It's a neat little town," the pastor said.

Phairas said he booked The Dartts for Super Bowl Sunday based on their availability. Phairas, who has a background in music, said he was always impressed with the group's singing and powerful message.

Tracy Dartt, the patriarch of the singing family, said the musical group was formed in 1995. The Dartts now include Dartt, his wife Sharon, son Stone Mountain, and friend B.J. Daniels.

Dartt said the Nashville, Tenn.-based group performs about 200 concerts a year, and always includes an annual tour of Florida venues. He said the music is a mix of Southern gospel, country-western and other styles.

The Dartts' best known song is "God on the Mountain," which Tracy Dartt wrote. He said he was inspired by his belief that God is always present, regardless of the circumstance.

"God is with us on the mountain top. He's with us in the deepest, darkest valleys. We can always depend on him," he said.

The group's greatest gift, he said, "is sharing the gospel" through its music.
