PLANT CITY – The registration deadline is May 7 for a basketball tournament to raise money for the Plant City Colts youth football league.
Adults and youth teams can participate in the 3 on 3 tournament at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 17 at the center, 1601 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
The league’s new president, Angelo Murray, hopes families will make a day of it.
“We’ll have more than basketball going on,” Murray said, adding that there will be flag football and food available. He’s also working on other entertainment.
The league hopes to raise $7,000 for new helmets for the players, said Debra Floyd, who is helping organize the tournament. Murray said the league has for years bought used equipment and the helmets were no longer acceptable.
“I wouldn’t put my grandson in one. We got rid of them. They just needed to be replaced,” said Murray, who as a youngster played in the Colts league.
The league was formed in about 1971 and offers football and cheerleading for youngsters 4 to 15 years old.
The basketball tournament will include adult and youth divisions. The registration fee is $100 per adult team (16 years old or older) and $50 per youth team. Prices are for teams with five members. Youth divisions include teams for 9- and 10-year-olds, 11- and 12-year-olds, and 13- to 15-year-olds.
Trophies will be awarded to winning teams.
Registration is 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Colts clubhouse, next to the baseball field. Tournament registration for the tournament is also available at www.pccoltsfootballcheer.com.
