Barbecue and more featured at Friday and Saturday festival in Lakeland


LAKELAND – More than 40 cooking teams will serve up meat and compete for $8,000 in prizes at a barbecue festival at the Sun ‘n Fun campus at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport.

When Pigs Fly South will feature music and barbecue from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Friday also includes a cornhole tournament with a $5,000 top prize and Saturday’s activities include a car, airplane and motorcycle show and fun for children.

There is no admission charge to the second annual When Pigs Fly South, which is sponsored by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Parking is $5.

The venue is at 4175 Medulla Road.

The barbecue teams, mostly from the Lakeland area, will compete for prizes and sell samples of their meat.

The Lakeland Rotary South is the presenting sponsor and proceeds benefit charities that include the Sun ‘n Fun’s educational programs.
