PLANT CITY An April 5 fundraising walk raised thousands of dollars to benefit the Pregnancy Care Center of Plant City and its mission to provide care to pregnant women and others.
About 70 staff members, supporters and community volunteers walked about a two-mile course around the downtown area for donations and pledges. A final accounting won’t be available for a few days but the walk raised at least more than $14,500.
Centers with similar missions around the nation took part in the annual fundraiser, entitled this year as “Taking Steps 4 Life.” Executive Director Darlene Davis said.
Davis said during a brief presentation before the walk began that, “our center is growing like crazy; we are saving lives.”
She added that last year the event was specifically geared toward raising money to purchase a new ultrasound machine, which has greatly increased the center’s ability to provide services to the community. The number of women using the center’s ultrasound grew by 1,100 percent, she said.
After the walk, prizes were awarded to the top three participants who raised the most in sponsorships. Robbie West, Elizabeth Voightman and Vickie Knight took home gift certificates from Publix Supermarkets, Sheer Expressions and Parkesdale Farms respectively.
“We thank those who donated the prizes and everyone who raised money for our sponsors,” Davis said.
The Pregnancy Care Center at 304 N. Collins St. offers free services which include pregnancy tests, limited ultrasounds, parenting classes, adoption as an option, abortion recovery, and abstinence and sexually-transmitted disease education.
