Wishes for a good year as Jewish New Year begins

Celebration of the Jewish New Year began at dusk Wednesday night for Pinellas County’s estimated 25,000 Jewish residents.

Meaning literally “head of the year,” Rosh Hashanah’s customs include sounding a shofar (an instrument fashioned from a ram’s horn) and eating apples dipped in honey to signify a sweet new year.
