ST. PETERSBURG — The owner of the Tampa Bay Times is selling a 2-acre parking lot near the newspaper’s downtown office to a developer with plans for luxury apartments.
The 200-space parking lot is between Second and Third avenues south, behind the Times’ downtown offices and across the street from the new Beacon apartment complex.
Developer NRP previously bought a 4.3-acre parking lot from the Times Publishing Co. to build Beacon, a 326-unit luxury apartment building on the opposite side of Third Avenue South, and it recently contacted the newspaper company about the adjacent parking lot.
“As far as we know, it will be similar to what they have now, luxury apartments and covered parking,” Times communications director Jounice Nealy-Brown said.
The Times had not listed the land for sale and the company is not sharing terms of the deal, which is expected to close late this fall, Nealy-Brown said.
NRP will reserve 200 spaces for Times employees in the new apartment development, similar to their arrangement with the Beacon property, she said.
Executives from NRP did not immediately return calls Wednesday afternoon requesting comment on their development plans.
The announcement of the sale coincides with a massive boom in residential construction in downtown St. Petersburg, where numerous luxury apartments and condominium projects have broken ground or opened their doors in the past two years.
