A 14-year-old boy was badly hurt this evening when he was struck by a car while trying to cross U.S. 19 North, Clearwater police said.

There are few details available, but police said a preliminary investigation showed the white male was attempting to cross the multi-lane highway in an area with no crosswalks about 5:32 p.m. He crossed the southbound lanes, then hopped over the barrier and entered the northbound lanes and was struck in the outside lane, police said.

The boy, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with possible life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver did not appear to be impaired, police said.

The highway has reopened, and the accident is still under investigation.
