A 15-year-old high school student accidentally shot another student in the foot at a St. Petersburg park, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Two students were at Lake Vista Park on Thursday afternoon. A 15-year-old boy who attends nearby Lakewood High School was showing off a handgun to a 16-year-old boy.

As the 15-year-old showed off the gun, it went off and a bullet struck the 16-year-old in the foot, the police department said. The victim was treated at a local hospital and interviewed by detectives.

The shooter fled the scene after the shooting. He later told investigators that he gave the handgun to another teenager, police said.

The gun hasn’t been located. Police think it may have stolen during a burglary.

The victim attends another school and is not an acquaintance of the shooter, police said.

It isn’t known if the shooter took the gun to Lakewood High, which went on lockdown for about an hour after the shooting.

The case remains under investigation.
