Some much-needed rain is soaking Tampa Bay area today, with pockets of heavy showers ahead of a cold front that could produce severe storms tonight but a yield to a pleasant weekend.

The strong storms and heavy rain began pushing into areas in the southern Tampa Bay areas early this morning, and have continued continue throughout the day, News Channel 8 meteorologist Leigh Spann said.

A tornado watch was canceled for the entire Tampa Bay area, but remains in effect for some areas to the south.

Temperatures are approachin 80 today with high humidity and gusty winds. Lows will be in the mid- to upper-60s.

The winds will get stronger tonight as the storm system pushes onshore from the Gulf of Mexico tonight into Friday morning.

The cold front could produce extremely heavy rain, with damaging winds and strong hail before it clears later Friday morning, leading to a partly cloudy weekend with highs near 80 and minimal rain chances.
