An 80-year-old St. Petersburg man was killed this afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle while walking at westbound 54th Avenue North at 81{+s}{+t} Street North in Pinellas County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

About 4:10 p.m., the man, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was walking across 54th Avenue in a marked crosswalk. A 2001 Ford F350 pickup driven by Jon M. Smith, 59, of St. Petersburg was headed west and maneuvered around a vehicle that had stopped for the pedestrian, striking the man in the crosswalk, FHP said.

The pedestrian was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he died of his injuries, FHP said.

The incident remains under investigation, and charges are pending, FHP said.
