St. Pete transient accused of rape, recording video of attack

Published:

A transient was arrested Monday morning, accused of raping a woman in an area of St. Petersburg known to be frequented by prostitutes and recording video of the assault with his cellphone, authorities said.

Steve Carvajal, 26, faces charges of kidnapping, sexual battery and carrying a concealed weapon. The amount of bail was not available.

About 11:45 p.m. Sunday, patrol officers spotted a woman chasing a man on 34th Street, St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz said. The man and woman were stopped by the officers.

The woman told officers the man, later identified as Carvajal, had just sexually assaulted a woman in a nearby field on the 3500 block of Morris Street North, Puetz said.

Officers said they tracked down the victim, who told them Carvajal sexually assaulted her several times and recorded at least one of the assaults with the cellphone camera. Investigators confiscated the phone to check whether other assaults or victims were recorded.
