Two guns stolen from a St. Petersburg police detective’s unmarked vehicle were recovered Tuesday, a day after the car was stolen and dumped in a lake.
The detective's personally owned Colt AR-15 rifle and department-issued Glock .45-caliber handgun were taken from the trunk, as was a portable police radio.
On Tuesday, detectives developed information that led them to the weapons. The AR-15 was recovered about 6 p.m., and the Glock was at another location about 6:30 p.m., police said.
The radio has not been found.
The 2007 Chevrolet Impala was stolen Monday from the detective’s home in south St. Petersburg and later found submerged in Lake Maggiore, police said.
According to police, the thief apparently broke into the detective’s personal vehicle, where the keys to the Impala were kept in a center console.
No other information was released.
The investigation is ongoing.
