A St. Petersburg man stole a bicycle with a dog sitting in a basket on the handlebars Sunday night and then abandoned the canine a mile away, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Richard Allen Wise, 31, who lives in a mobile home park at 3901 46th Ave. N., faces charges of grand theft and animal cruelty. He is still in the Pinellas County Jail, with bail set at $7,000.

About 10:40 p.m. Sunday, Wise took the bicycle and the dog at 5790 34th St. N., according to arrest affidavits. A mile away, he dropped off the dog, leaving it to its own devices. Deputies discovered the dog about an hour later.

The dog has chronic health problems, including partial blindness and back injuries, and requires special medical attention.

The bicycle was valued at $150 and the dog at $200, according to arrest reports.
