St. Pete bicyclist in critical condition after crash with motorcycle

A St. Petersburg bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition after he ran a stop sign and was struck by a motorcycle early Friday, police said.
Jason Peter Smith, 40, was riding a bicycle south on Seventh Street North approaching First Avenue North about 12:30 a.m., St. Petersburg police said. At the same time, a 1984 Honda operated by Thomas Lepka, 44, approached from the west on First Avenue.
According to a witness, Smith failed to yield at a stop sign, entered the intersection and rode into the path of motorcycle, police said. The front of the motorcycle struck the left side of the bicycle, police said.
Lepka and Smith were launched from their vehicles and landed in the roadway, police said. After impact, the motorcycle hit a street sign and tree, police said.
Smith was not wearing a helmet, police said. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center and listed in critical condition.
