CLEARWATER - Artists were hard at work this week sculpting the sands of Clearwater Beach ahead of the 10-day Frenchy's Sugar Sand Festival, which begins today.
The signature piece of the festival will be a walk-through exhibit of sand sculptures, just south of Pier 60, carved out of 1,000 tons of sand.
The festival will feature sand-sculpting clinics this weekend and next, with sculpting tools provided; a circus-style show featuring a rope walker, trapeze artist and acrobats; a sand-sculpting competition on the final weekend; fireworks on April 27; and the usual Sunsets at Pier 60 festivities nightly.
Most activities are free, except for the sand-sculpture exhibit. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students ages 13 to 18 and $5 for seniors and military personnel. Children 12 and younger get in free.
