A Tarpon Springs High School 11th-grader faces charges of bringing a loaded gun on campus Monday morning, police said.

Dre’Tonio Maitez Greer, 16, told officials he recently found the gun and brought it to school for protection because of problems he was having outside of school with other students.

The black, .32-caliber Berretta had three rounds in the magazine, which was inserted into the gun, police said. There were no rounds in the chamber, however.

The serial number had been filed down, but the student said he was not aware of this, police said.

About 8 a.m., the school’s resource officer followed up on an anonymous tip that a student had a gun on campus, 1411 Gulf Road. The officer took Greer from a classroom to his office and advised the teen of the tip, police said.

“The student admitted to having a firearm concealed in his right pocket of a pair of red shorts he was wearing underneath his jeans,” Tarpon Springs police said in a statement.

The teen told the officer that he found the gun in the bushes on Meres Boulevard, south of the school, police said.

There were no threats made on campus and school activity was never disrupted, police said.

Greer faces charges of possessing a firearm on school grounds and carrying a concealed firearm, both felonies. He was arrested and taken to the county’s juvenile detention center.
