A pedestrian was struck and killed Friday night after leaving St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Walter H. Weaver Jr., 54, had just walked out of the hospital’s parking lot and was crossing Fifth Avenue N. just east of a crosswalk when he was struck by a PT Cruiser driven by Edward Austin Jablon III, 24, police said.

“Jablon was distracted by the use of his cell phone and he failed to observe the pedestrian in the roadway,” police said in a news release.

Weaver, who police identified as a homeless man from Liberty, Ky., was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The pedestrian’s name is being withheld until his family is notified.

Police have not said if Jablon will face charges.
