Students across Pinellas County ditched their buses and carpools Wednesday for International Walk to School Day.

Students at Eisenhower Elementary in Clearwater and at more than 30 schools across the county took to the sidewalks to promote pedestrian safety and physical fitness.

In the wee hours of the morning, St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster turned out at Lakewood Elementary in St. Petersburg to join with school staff, community representatives, firefighters and police officers to escort students to class.

Students were taught to pay attention to street signs, traffic patterns and good pedestrian behaviors, as well as becoming familiar with directions to their schools and homes.
