Pinellas deputies help revive near-drowning victim

Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies helped revive a man who was found face down in the water off Honeymoon Island this afternoon.

At 1:05 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call of a near-drowning at the southern swim area just outside of Hurricane Pass at Honeymoon Island State Park. When they arrived, bystanders had retrieved Jash Morina, 81, of Palm Harbor from about 100 yards from shore.

Patrol Deputy Kimon Koungras and Marine Unit Deputy Charles Meehan began to render aid and alternated CPR until Dunedin Fire Rescue arrived on scene. Morina was transported to Mease Dunedin Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Morina told his wife he was going to go for a quick swim, deputies said. His wife told deputies he’d been gone a while when she noticed some commotion on the beach and realized something had happened to her husband.
