A 56-year-old man crossing a St. Petersburg street was struck by a car Tuesday morning and hospitalized with critical injuries, police said.

The man was walking in the crosswalk north across Fifth Avenue North at 25th Street carrying a bag of groceries, police said. At 11:23 a.m., he was struck by a westbound Nissan Altima, with the impact flipping him onto the windshield, then falling to the road, police said.

The pedestrian had surgery at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, police said, and is in critical condition.

The driver of the Nissan, Antonio Sanchez, 79, of 3750 32 Ave. N., St. Petersburg, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Sanchez and his wife suffered minor injuries in the crash and were treated by paramedics at the scene, police said.
