Pedestrian killed crossing St. Pete street

A pedestrian died early today after he was struck crossing a street in St. Petersburg, and police are asking people who stopped to take photos to contact them.

About 3:10 a.m. today, a white man was struck by a vehicle near the north crosswalk at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and 4th Street, according to St. Petersburg police.

He was walking east across 4th Street, police said, when an unidentified vehicle tried to stop but hit the man, sending him onto the hood and into the windshield before he fell to the pavement.

The man was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The vehicle drove away the scene, police said, adding that it should have an damage to its windshield.

Fire Rescue personnel attending to the man saw several people who had stopped their cars on 4th Street to take pictures with cell phones. Police are asking that anyone with information about this crash to call (727) 893-7780.

The victim’s identification is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
