Pedestrian dies after running in front of truck, St. Pete police say

A pedestrian who was struck by a car as he was running across a street Tuesday night has died, St. Petersburg police said.

At 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, Nelson Sparrow, 22, 2835 Dr Martin Luther King Jr St. S., was standing on a curb in the 3600 block of Dr Martin Luther King Jr Street South when he began running toward the northbound lanes of Dr Martin Luther King Jr Street, police said.

Meanwhile, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup driven by Alfonso Rogers 61, 6357 19th St. S., was northbound on Dr Martin Luther King Jr Street South, exiting a construction zone near Lake Maggiore.

As Sparrow neared the northbound curb lane, he tried to stop before running into the path of the Chevrolet, but failed, police said. The pickup struck Sparrow, throwing him onto the pavement, where Sparrow struck his head.

Sparrow was transported to Bayfront Medical Center , where he was pronounced dead at 11:14 a.m. today, police said.

Charges are not pending, police said.
