A toddler lost her lower legs and part of her hand Wednesday night after she was run over by a riding lawn mower, Palm Harbor firefighters said.

The accident happened at 560 Hollow Ridge Road, Palm Harbor, in the West Lake Village Subdivision, officials said.

The 2-year-old girl ran in front of a red riding mower being operated by either her father or grandfather. She slipped and fell, and her legs were both severed below the knees and part of her hand was cut off, firefighters said.

The girl was flown to Tampa General Hospital, and her parents were being treated for hysteria, firefighters said. A hospital spokeswoman said the family wouldn't comment.

A neighbor said the family had lived in the neighborhood for two years or less and has several children.

One neighbor said she was leaving her home at 6:15 p.m. and saw the girl's father in the garage. It appeared he was going to mow the lawn. When she returned home at 7:45 p.m., she couldn't drive to her home because of the police cars and ambulance on Hollow Ridge Road, she said.

Neighbors are in shock, she said, and they're praying for the child and family.
