A 35-year-old man was killed and his passenger was seriously injured Wednesday morning when their vehicle rolled over on Interstate 275 at 118th Avenue N. in St. Petersburg.

About 9:25 a.m., Jose Quinones or Largo was southbound on Interstate 275 in a 2002 Ford Explorer when took the exit ramp to 118th Avenue N. and lost control of the SUV, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Quinones drove onto the inside shoulder on the south side and then overcorrected, driving onto the grass shoulder on the north side when the vehicle overturned several times.

Bystanders said Quinones, who was ejected, was pinned under the driver’s side of the Explorer and they had rolled the car off him when rescue crews arrived, according to St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue.

Quinones died at the scene, FHP said.

His passenger, Melissa Lopez, 31, of Largo, had to be removed from the SUV by Fire Rescue. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, the highway patrol said.
