PINELLAS PARK — A mentally-troubled 29-year-old Largo man shot and killed his mother’s fiance as he lay in bed in a hotel room Wednesday night, then turned the gun on himself, according to Pinellas Park police.
The fiance has been identified as Mitchell Arnold, 48.
The shooter has been identified as Anthony McClaney. He is currently in critical condition at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, formerly known as Bayfront Medical Center, said Sgt. Adam Geissenberger of the Pinellas Park police department.
McClaney walked into Room 330 at the TownePlace Suites, 13200 49th St. N., and proceeded to the bedroom where his mother was lying with Arnold, Geissenberger said.
McClaney shot Arnold, told his mother, “I’m going to be with Jesus,” then shot himself, Geissenberger said.
McClaney, Arnold, McClaney’s mother and other family members had been staying in the hotel since they were displaced by a fire in Largo last month, the sergeant said.
