A 68-year-old man is dead after crossing a road and being hit by a pickup truck while carrying his family’s dog.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office says Gilbert Greene and his wife Brenda, 66, were crossing S.R. 580 in Safety Harbor about 7:30 p.m. Friday.

According to investigators, Greene was hit by a Ford Ranger driven by Mark Cavanagh, 55. Greene was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

Detectives say neither speed nor impairment appear to be a factor in the crash.

The Greene’s 8-year-old miniature dachshund “Rudi” ran away after the crash.

According to deputies, someone spotted the dog, still dragging its red leash, walking in the area of 3141 McMullen Booth Road on Saturday morning.

The person recovered the dog and called the sheriff’s office. The dog was then reunited with Brenda Greene.
